Abstract :
Wound dressings are of crucial importance, providing controlled release of a certain drug to the wound, as well as insolating it from external hazards. Atovaquone is a drug with interesting healing properties and has not been used in wound dressing before. This study focuses on the production of a wound dressing made from Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and containing Atovaquone (ATQ), as well as the release behavior of that dressing. Other properties of the dressing such as air permeability and swelling, which are also significant for a good dressing, were studied. Matrices were produced by solution blowing, then thermally crosslinked without using a crosslinking agent. The study compares groups loaded with different amounts of the drug, as well as the nanofiber morphology. Results show a successful drug release with relatively quick crosslinking that significantly changed the fibrous morphology, and reduced air permeability. Also, the thin matrix showed significant swelling within seconds, the physical structure of the mat successfully remained intact nonetheless.
