Abstract :
Tyres consist of many different rubber compounds that meet different performance characteristics. The ability of these compounds to vulcanize together at the desired level is extremely important for integrity and durability of the tyre. Inner liner compound, which is responsible with barrier properties, is the most challenging component to vulcanize as it has a very distinct curing behaviour. Improving the co-vulcanization of liner compound with carcass is important for overall performance of the tyre. In order to meet required barrier properties, only a few rubbers (e.g butyl rubber) can be used in liner compounds. Epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) has been attracting much attention with its good barrier properties and improved adhesion along with its compatibility with both polar fillers and non-polar rubber matrices. In this study, it was aimed to develop ENR based tyre inner liner compounds as an alternative to butyl rubber and to have improved adhesion between liner and the carcass during tyre curing process. ENR compounds were designed to apply various sulphur curing systems including co-agent assisted vulcanization. Rheological, mechanical, dynamic, and adhesion properties of the liner compounds were investigated. The effects of curing systems on overall performance of the ENR-based liner compounds were compared with the butyl rubber-based reference.
